Spanish

¡Bienvenido a la página web de St. Joeys! ¡Aquí se habla español!

Spanish is one of the official languages of Spain and of most Latin American countries.  In all, 21 nations use Spanish as their primary language. It is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Nearly 400 million people speak Spanish and this makes Spanish the second most spoken language in the world. Mexico is the world’s largest Spanish-speaking country and Spanish is now the second most widely-spoken language in the United States.

In Spain, Spanish or el español is more commonly known as elcastellano.

In St. Joseph’s, students study both Spanish and French in first year and can choose to study either Spanish or French from Second Year onwards to Leaving Certificate Level. Spanish is a very popular language in the school. In Transition Year, students explore Spanish culture in more detail including project work and studying Spanish language films. All levels and abilities are catered for in the classes. Spanish classes consist of oral work including conversation skills, aural work including listening to Spanish tapes, written work including vocabulary & grammar lessons and reading comprehensions using both journalistic & literary articles. Students perform very well in Spanish in both the Junior & Leaving Certificate exams.
