Mathematics

St. Joseph’s Mathematics Department takes a fresh approach to mathematics designed to equip students with skills that will be useful later in life. Instead of receiving information in a passive way students are actively engaged in the learning process through discussion and investigation. Students are guided to develop the resourcefulness to think for themselves and to solve complex problems in innovative ways. With the introduction of project maths students might now face unfamiliar questions in exams so it is now more important than ever that students are equipped with strategies for problem solving these type of questions as well as the essential mathematics knowledge needed to calculate the solution. Above all we hope our students enjoy, participate and achieve success in mathematics and we will do everything in our power to make that possible.

The aim of our department is to enable our students to

  • enjoy mathematics and develop a love, fascination and interest in the world of numbers
  • become confident and competent mathematics students
  • develop their use of mathematics as a tool for solving problems
  • become logical and articulate thinkers
  • become familiar with mathematics terminology and be able to use it in a clear and precise manner
  • achieve excellent results in their mathematics examinations and reach their full potential
