(a) Junior Cycle
The Range of subjects is as follows:
Religious Studies; Gaeilge; English; French; Spanish; German; Mathematics; Business Studies; Science; Technical Graphics; History; Geography; Art; Music; Computer Studies; Physical Education. Students are encouraged to take Higher Level in all subjects where possible. Due to parallel teaching, all students are offered the opportunity of attempting Higher Level in the core subjects i.e. Gaeilge, English and Mathematics. All optional subjects e.g. French and Art are offered to all classes.
(b) Transition Year Programme
This course, taken by all students after completion of the Junior Certificate, has been in existence in St. Joseph's since 1989. The following subject areas are covered:
Religion and Life Skills; Gaeilge; English; Mathematics; French; German; Spanish; Biology; Chemistry; Physics; Accounting; Economics; Business Organisation; History; Geography; Art; Music; Computer Studies; Mini Company; Current Affairs; Third World Studies; Career Guidance;
A high standard is maintained during Transition Year in the academic subjects. Students are exposed to all areas e.g. Science, Business, Language and Humanities subjects, with a view to making an informed choice at Leaving Certificate and ensuring a suitable combination of subjects to facilitate Career needs. Valuable experience for working life is attained by students in their participation in Mini-Companies which are managed by students and are structured on accepted business procedures.
The development of pastoral, communicative social and study skills is a major feature of the Transition Programme and is comprehensively covered in the Communication, Religion, Life Skills and Personal Development options. Extensive use is made of a modern computer laboratory for Transition Year Students. Two hours instruction is given in computer studies per week. Various leisure and recreational activities are provided for Transition Year Students: Gaelic Football, Soccer, Squash, Tennis, Pitch & Putt, and Badminton. Transition Year Students also gain important experience of the world outside school when they participate in programmes such as Community Work, Outdoor Activities and Work Experience.
