Computer Studies

Information Technology keeps changing and developing all the time. Its impact on all our lives continues to grow and it is essential that the pupils of St. Joseph’s can take advantage of its opportunities and understand its effects.

Over the last year there have been a number of developments in the IT area. The school is now covered by a wireless network. The network is connected to the internet via high speed fibre optic cables. Each classroom is equipped with an ultra-short throw projector and a wireless desktop computer. All attendances etc. are recorded using the VSware database system.

technology-classroomIT is taught to students at both Junior and Leaving Certificate Level. This is done within the given Junior and Leaving Certificate Structure. Given that IT is not an examination subject, it is taught on its own for a limited period and then where possible used in the rest of the curriculum.

Students in Second Year are introduced to the Microsoft Suite of Programs, including Word, Excel & PowerPoint. They are instructed in the proper use of the internet and internet safety.

At Transition Year students undergo a typing course during the first term. They continue their study with the Microsoft Suite of Programs for the remainder of the year.

In St. Joseph’s many other subject teachers make use of our Computer Room.

Our Computer Room was completely renovated during the summer of 2015. We now have replaced our old computers with modern laptops that can be stored away conveniently when not in use. Each student will be given their own login when the system is fully up and running.
